THE STUDY OF TEACHER TALK AND STUDENT TALK IN THE CLASSROOM INTERACTION AT NINTH GRADE OF SMP N 2 KERINCI

These are some problems at SMP N 2 Kerinci that usually faced by teacher and student. One of them is that students tend to be shy to interact in English during in the classroom. They fear to make mistakes and laughed by their friends. Poor interaction between teacher and students is a common failure in learning English. An increase in the amount of classroom interaction will help student to learn the target language easily and quickly. Therefore, teacher has the important role in building successful classroom interaction. The objectives of this research are: (1) to find out the categories of teacher talk and student talk that did teacher and students at SMP N 2Kerinci, (2) to find out the types of teacher talk in classroom interaction at SMP N 2 Kerinci. This research was designed as a case study research and purposive sampling to chosen the participants. To obtain the data researcher used observation and interview. The instrument was used by the researcher to obtain the data observation checklist, interview guide and type recording. The results of this research are about the categories and types of clasroom interaction. The categories of teacher talk and student talk are (1) accepts feeling, (2) praises or encourages, (3) accepts or uses the ideas of student, (4) asks the questions, (5) lecturing, (6) giving direction, (7) criticizing or justfying authority, (8) students response, (9) students initiation and (10) silence. The types of classroom interaction are (1) teacher interact to students, (2) teacher interact to a student, (3) student interact to a teacher and (4) student interact to student. Benefit of this study that researcher found are this study will be increase the studies of linguistic related with teacher talk and student in English classes. This research will give us the information about the types and the function of teacher talk and student talk in the classroom and in addition, this study is useful as an additional reference for those who are interested in making a further study on this teacher talk.
